A mouth guard is a soft plastic or laminate
device used in sports to prevent oral injuries to the teeth, mouth,
cheeks, tongue and jaw.
Why choose a custom
There are various off-the-shelf options in various
sizes at relatively low prices, but it is fair to state that these
can do potentially more harm than good, because they lack a precise
fit to the mouth of the wearer. In the case of an injury, pressure
can be transferred to precisely where it can do most damage. Little
or no adjustment is possible other than minor trimming and this rarely
provides a correct fit or the necessary comfort.
"Boil and bite" mouthguards are a little
better in terms of protection. Made from a thernmo-plastic material,
they are heated before placing into the mouth where they form a shape
that better fits the teeth conformation. Protection is therefore improved,
but the comfort rarely compares with a custom-made mouthguard.
To make a custom mouthguard, a dental impression is
made in the same way as used for dentures. From the impressions, a
